August 2008

Governor's Glimpse

August is Membership emphasis month. If Rotary is to expand our role of Making Dreams Real for others we must have plenty of Rotarians to do the job. I encourage you and your club to plan a Membership drive or contest to inspire your members to recruit new Rotarians. Your club’s membership should reflect your community. Does it? Membership is the responsibility of each of us. We must ensure a new generation of Rotarians to continue our work.

The August issue of The Rotarian Magazine has the best overview of “Rotary Basics” that I have seen. It begins on page 55 and includes sections on the Organization of Rotary, Responsibilities of Club Members, Rotary’s Guiding Principles, RI Programs, The Rotary Foundation, and other very informative data. Please take a few minutes to read it. You will learn something you didn’t know.

Did you know that you can promote Rotary in your community? CD-Roms and DVD’s are available free from Rotary International. They are available for Television, Radio, Billboards and Print. Order Humanity in Motion IV (#612) at shop.rotary.org or 847-866-4600.

Club Presidents should have received your “Between The Lions” (BTL) packets by now. There is good news and bad news. The good news is that we will probable be able to have about 25 classrooms during the 08-09 Rotary year. The bad news is that we probable will not be able to do all of the classrooms that we would like to do. But, BTL is a long term project and we can do more classrooms every year. This is really an exciting project. If your club, for whatever reason, cannot do a BTL project, please consider another Literacy project. The Dictionary Project is a good alternative.
