 From:    Tom Branum, Sr.
              RI Director 2007-2009

Dear District 6820 Rotarian,

This month, I ask you to reflect on the words of two past presidents.

The first is from 1863 by Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States.

“I do therefore invite my fellow citizens…to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November, as a day of Thanksgiving…”

The second is by Past RI President Raja Saboo (1991-92), from a speech I heard in 1996 at Sandusky, Ohio as he spoke about supporting The Rotary Foundation.

          “There are three reasons why people give;
                   1) Because they are asked to give,
                   2) For recognition,
                   3) Because they love to give.”

Raja went on to say that it does not matter which motivates a person to contribute, just so long as Rotarians honor their obligation to do so.

It seems appropriate that November is Rotary Foundation Month. We do have much to be thankful for. I am thankful for being invited to join Rotary. I am thankful for the opportunity to be relevant to others through our Rotary connections. I am thankful that Linda and I will celebrate 50 years of marriage on November 23rd.

I am thankful for the member who handed me a $10,000 Annual Programs Fund Check 12 years ago with the proviso that his name not be published. He gave for reasons number 1 and 3 above. Perhaps giving $100 per year is more appropriate for your situation. Whatever the amount that I right for you, I am asking you to make a contribution in November, according to your means, and ask others to do the same. We truly mean EREY, don’t we? Trust me, the more we learn about TRF, the more we will love to give.

REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY

“The most precious resource any nation on earth has is THE CHILDREN.”

These words of wisdom from DG Dave Robinette D6060 remind us that RI President DK Lee asks that every club participate in a grant to reduce child mortality during this Rotary year.

From: Dong Kurn (D.K.) Lee
          President, Rotary International

Dear fellow Rotarians,

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.

It sounds so simple, yet it means so much.

It means so much to every one of the people touched by Foundation-supported programs every year- the children too poor to go to school, the families who have lost everything in a disaster, the communities that lack sanitation, clean water, and medical care.

It means so much to the two billion children now living lives free from polio. Because of the work that the Foundation has helped support, five million cases of paralysis and more than 250,000 deaths from polio have been prevented.

Today, we are in what we hope will be the last stages of the fight against polio. All of you have helped through your support of our Foundation. Through the Foundation, we are able to be part of the day-to-day work of polio  eradication by helping supply the transportation, the fliers, the advertisements, and even the lollipops to ensure we reach all children with the essential oral polio vaccine and make each round of immunization a success.

Those of you who have participated in a National Immunization Day know exactly what I’m talking about when I say there’s nothing like it- nothing like knowing you’re being a part of saving lives and making history. And if you can’t be there yourself, then being part of the work through our Foundation is the next best thing.

Why do we have a Foundation? We have a Foundation because our Foundation lifts Rotary up. It lets every club and every district do the most it possibly can. It allows everyone of us to be part of all of Rotary’s work, and it brings that work to greater and greater heights.

As we celebrate Rotary Foundation Month, we should all remember that The Rotary Foundation is our Foundation. It’s here for us and because of us; it allows us to do more, to be more, and to bring more hope to the world. The responsibility for keeping our Foundation strong lies with each of us.

Dong Kurn (D.K.) Lee

From: Joel Clements                                                       November, 2008
          DG, District 6820

Our Foundation giving for 2007-2008 was $46.72 per Rotarian. That was the second lowest of all 13 districts in Zone 29. We averaged $65 in 2006-2007. We can do better. Please encourage your members to become Paul Harris Substaining Fellows. Some clubs require this and add $25 per quarter to the quarterly billing. New Rotarians should be told on the front end that they are expected to support our Rotary Foundation. Remember, 50% of this giving comes back to our district in the form of District Designated Funds. This money is used in our district to fund scholarships, reading programs, humanitarian projects and literacy programs. Giving to the Rotary Foundation Makes Dreams Real.
