September 2008

GOVERNOR’S GLIMPSE

District 6820 is off to a good start. I see new members being inducted and new Paul Harris Fellows being awarded. Pictures are attached from the clubs visited during August. Thanks to the Assistant Governors who are doing a great job.

District Governor Nominee/ District Membership Chairman Roscoe is after new members. His membership contest for August and September is already working. Most clubs are having a good time with this. Rankin County has a “Wall of Shame” where the club member’s pictures will remain until they bring in a prospect…Shame on them. Other clubs are splitting their clubs into teams to challenge each other to bring in the most new prospects.

Please give some serious thought to your own “circle of friends” to think about people that you know that you haven’t thought to ask to consider Rotary.

Literacy- Between the Lions is underway. We should know soon which Day care centers have been qualified. This incredible program will “Make Dreams Real” for young children who might not otherwise have a chance for a happy and successful life. If you can’t or don’t get to sponsor a classroom this year, don’t be discouraged. We can only do about 16-20 classrooms each year. Your club can do one next year. This will be a multi-year project and our district is very fortunate to be on the ground floor of this effort. It is a proven and tested program. And like PDG Jack Forbus says, “who could possibly have a problem with a program that helps three and four year old children learn to read.”

Foundation- It appears our District’s Foundation Giving for 2007-208 was off. Please encourage your fellow district Rotarians to become a “Every Rotarian-Every Year” donor to the Foundation. Our goal and RI’s goal is $100 per Rotarian per year. ($2.00 per week, or $25.00 per quarter or $100 per year). We can do this…to “Make Dreams Real,” by doing good in this world, for those that need our help.

Group Study Exchange- with India, is being organized. Look for more information soon. We need candidates to go to India. Contact Chuck Jordan with names and for information.

Alumni- Rotarian Joe Harris has assembled a data sheet of Rotary Alumni in each of our club areas. Please use this information to make contact with these alumni as prospects for Rotary. Thanks Joe!

Polio- To meet the Bill Gates $100 Million match the Foundation would like for each club to consider one new project that will raise at least $1000.00 for Polio Plus. This gives others, other than Rotarians, an opportunity to support the polio eradication effort. Waynesboro is doing a shotgun raffle to do this. There are lots of good ideas out there for special projects to accomplish this.

New Orleans 2011- As most of you know, New Orleans will host the Rotary International Convention in June, 2011. As our “neighbor club,” we need to help them pull this off. Our District would like to raise at least $50,000 to help them with the financing. There is strength in numbers. We have about 2500 Rotarians in District 6820. We will be asking each Rotarian in our District to consider giving at least $10.00 per year for three years to do this. I will send each club President a packet later this year for this effort. Please support this effort to help our sister District do a good job with this.

They will also need help with “manpower” and “womanpower.” It will take a lot of us to make this happen. I promise you it will be the experience of a lifetime to work an International Rotary Convention, so close to home.

Save the Dates:

  • President-Elect Training- March 6 &7, 2009, Vicksburg, MS
  • District Conference-  April 17th& 18th, 2009, Meridian, MS

Thanks for what you do as Rotarians!

Make Dreams Real,

Governor Joel
